What are mitochondria?

Think of your mitochondria as magnificent little built in batteries that power everything you do. They are the powerhouses within your cells and one of their most important jobs is to make sure your have enough ATP (energy) production. If you don’t have fully charged mitochondria, or not enough of them, every single body process will suffer! In fact a whole whopping 90% of your bodies energy is produced by them!

  • Power detoxification to clear things like chemicals, metals and hormones from the body.

  • Stimulate the death of damaged cells to prevent mutations that lead to cancer

  • Carry out cell signaling, which is vital for immune function and cell death

  • Produce heat (do you have cold hands and feet often?)

  • Repair DNA.

We like to think of our mitochondria as a root ROOT cause, without them you may not only feel chronically tired, but you may not be able to clear infections, struggling with immune challenges, cellular repair processes & even main body functions like detox. Bottom line they are VIP when it comes to healing at a root cause level.

But why are my mitochondria “dysfunctioning”?

First of all, as you age the amount of mitochondria you have begin to decline, as well as the efficiency in which they function. You cannot entirely prevent this but you can do A LOT to support the slowing of this.

Aside from aging here are the top factors behind mitochondrial dysfunction:

  • Viruses

  • Parasites

  • Metals

  • Mold

  • Oxidative Stress (etc.)

  • Emotional trauma

Each of these factors in themselves can be a single root cause to disease and illness, but when dealing with each of them (and especially multiple of them) it is impossible to not burden and weaken the mitochondria.

Let’s take a closer look at the these underlying burdens…

  • Viruses

    Herpes Simplex, Flu, Measles, Chicken Pox, Pneumonia, Bronchitis… there are MANY viruses we are exposed to and when not properly cleared can stay within our bodies (sometimes even dormant) causing a burden on our mitochondria. All viruses will interfere with calcium which will allow the virus to replicate and survive as well as damage cell membranes to move nutrients in and out of the cell to make ATP.

  • Parasites

    Roundworms, Amoebas, Tapeworms, Liver Flukes…humans, like any mammal are are not immune to parasites. Parasites can disrupt cell processes and burden the immune system. When in excess, they rob energy to deal with the stresses they cause the body.

  • Metals

    Heavy metals like Aluminum and Mercury can decrease the amount of energy your mitochondria can make. Heavy metals can also raise free radicals, cause cellular toxicity & interfere with the utilization of nutrients. Over time they can cause cell damage at a level that takes a lot of effort to repair!

  • Oxidative stress

    Parasites, viruses and metals can wreak havoc on our cells, but so can medications, mold, chemicals from household products, sprays from crops, processed foods, and Lyme disease. All these cause severe oxidative stress which makes cells unstable. Over time the stress can cause damage to even the DNA within your cells. With too much burden cells can no longer function and die.

  • Emotional Trauma

    Our bodies don’t know the difference between different sources of stress. To the body stress is stress. Emotional trauma can be just as much as a burden as any infection within the body. Trauma can be defined as any moment in life that caused a negative emotion to be felt. Those emotions as well as the memory are stored in the subconscious and even within the body, often causing stress as if it were in the present tense. Stress in any form causes cells to membranes to become damaged, inhibiting the transport of much needed nutrients as the demand on the mitochondria rises to deal with the perceived stress.
